OK someone's got to open the Grand Cru burgundy way too early and report back. I had to take a bottle to a tasting and this fit the theme so out came the cork. Decanted for several hours. It was fairly light in color, almost like a Beaujolais (gasp!). Obviously very primary, but it had more up front fruit than expected, a good bit of acidity, and soft tannins. Good depth of flavors on the palate. Unlike so many wines built for the long haul -- and I'm thinking in particular of the other current Chairman's Grand Cru, Louis Latour Corton Clos du Roi -- this was somewhat enjoyable at such a young age. (I only had a small taste of the Corton on two occasions, and it's 3 years older, but it's pretty tough.) But like the Corton this too clearly has a better life ahead of it. Rating it a 4 for today, likely would be a 5 a decade or more down the road. I'm surprised it does not say "Grand Cru" anywhere on the front or back label, although Charmes Chambertin is by definition exactly that.

Thanks for taking one for the team and opening up early. Was it received well by others? Your recap seems a little more restrained compared to your tasting notes at the CHRMs tasting. I will hold the 2 I picked up for quite some time.

At Chairman's tasting it jumped out of a lineup of lesser, and somewhat different, wines, and also my expectations were lower. This time it was one among many Chambertins, some much older, and my expectations were high. Yes others enjoyed it but everyone agreed it was much too young.
