July 1 Sale

Jordan at the East Side store foretold of a July 1 closeout coming. He mentioned the Steven Kent Cab was going down below $15 & the '04 Cinq Cepages was going to be $20. As I've written in past, I know a VA store owner who buys this from PLCB at $41 because it's better than his wholesale so $20 shouldn't last.

For interested western PA residents, Easat Side has about 35 bottles (they had 6 more until I reserved) & they will hold for you until the sale price kicks in.

Will this be an on-line sale only or in-store?

I'm in the same boat. I doubt it: I've done it before, but I'd be very surprised if there weren't a time limit on it.

In any case, the prices I paid were good. These are just amazingly better. Some of them are flat-out ridiculous.

So what's everyone getting? I'm going for a case of the Cinq Cepages, a case of the Bynum Allen Vineyard, some (2-3) Latour Aloxe-Corton, and a few assorted cheapie whites in small quantities.

Got it all set up. No nasty surprises, this time.

How did you line up the Bynum which is only available online? Are they charging shipping as well for the online only wines?

I'm disappointed that the Vietti Barolo and the Bynum Rochioli are not on the list on the web site this AM. Looks like there are none in the system. Did you guys snag them all early (jk)?

KevinP, not sure which web site list you're referring to? The Bynum Rochioli is included on the PAWineTalk Chairman's Selection page, on the LCB web site's "Chairman's Selection now in stores" and also on the www.pawineandspirits.com list of Chairman's Selections (you have to scroll to page 2 to get to it). Sale price hasn't taken effect yet.

The VIETTI BAROLO CASTIGLIONE 04 Code 23764 is an interesting case...it's not tracked on PAWineTalk anywhere, which would mean that it never appeared on the list of "Current" or "Upcoming" Chairman's Selections. It also does not appear on www.pawineandspirits.com. On www.lcb.state.pa.us it's listed but not showing any availability. That doesn't mean that some couldn't magically appear on pawineandspirits.com the morning of the sale (it's happened before). Or not.

Regarding people "buying" sale wines in advance...the best approach is ALWAYS to build a relationship with the Premium/Luxury wine buyer in your local Premium Collection store. As jlburd stated (and Capaneus implied) he spoke with one such sales person who agreed to hold some for him until the sale prices take effect.

Thanks! There is a sale list published here http://www.lcb.state.pa.us/plcb/cwp/view.asp?a=1328&q=559709 on the www.pawineandspirits.com site that does not list the Bynum Rochioli.

I used the Product Search page to look for the Vietti, saw no availability, and assumed the same for the Rochioli. Obviously, a bad assumption. I wonder if it's been removed from the Sale or if it's ommission from the list is an oversight?

Regardless, I'm not buying any wine (repeat 'til I believe myself!), which is why I've let my relationship with my local buyers slip!

Thread drift - are local buyers still buying? Didn't I read somewhere that purchase decisions were being centralized?

Not buying any wine (gasp!)??

Actually the Bynum Rochioli IS listed on the published sale list, but that list is just not sorted in any logical order and you really have to search for it - but it's in there, about halfway down.

Yes, the local folks in Premium Collections stores are now "Luxury Wine Consultants" and not buyers any more, buying decisions are all centralized now.

These sales can be tricky. Yea, there are some good buys for some average wines but think of the total you will spend. The 04 Cinq Cepages is an avg wine, not one of their best vintages. If you buy a case, that's $240. Think of what else you could purchase and enjoy more for that $240 that's not on sale. Maybe you only get 6 bottles but if you enjoy it more, isn't that the better buy?
I don't think there are any "Must Haves" on the list but some of the Killikanoon's are great buys and I will probably stock up on a lot of the inexpensive whites for everyday summer drinking. I recently had the Chapel Hill Verdehlo and really enjoyed it. Will be even better for $6.99!!

Sale is on NOW. www.pawineandspirits.com home page is currently screwed up, only shows the banner and an otherwise blank page. Nice! But you can login and you can search. If you click on search you'll get the regular search page, and the usual right-hand side menu then appears with the link to the Chairman's Selection list, but it doesn't work(!), just returns an error. If you type in a wine name in the search box and it's on the site it will be returned and show the sale price, you can add it to your cart and check out...I just did it, checkout was very slow but it eventually went through.

Good luck!

"Bill?"
"What?"
"Strange things are afoot at the Circle K."

So I went back and the home page was working again, clicked on Chairman's Selection and it listed like 22 pages, seemingly every Chairman's Selection from the last several years! Cinq Cepages, Heitz Cellars, Chateau de Tracy, Flora Springs Trilogy '03, and on and on. Like a kid in a candy store I paged through them adding several to my cart. Then when I got to about page 8 or 9 and clicked on the next page it was blank, and at the top it said there were now only 3 pages to view. I clicked on page 1 and it was back to the current list (sale prices shown). I tried to check out and of course it listed each thing in my cart and said there were no bottles available. If it seems too good to be true...

masi3v:

I didn't worry about the Bynum, given the quantity listed as on hand at the online store. But I *did* place the order as soon as Mark fired the starter gun, just in case. The rest fell into the local store relationship category: some they held, some they threatened other managers until they agreed to transfer.

Shipping is as usual: free for orders over $200 - but darn cheap in any case. Which I hadn't realized, so now I don't worry so much about getting the total up to the cutoff.

Now I have to decide whether to grab a little of the Chalk Hill Cab and the Barbera...

J2K:

Have to disagree: the Cinq Cepages is not one of their better vintages, but it's not one of the worst, either. And if you can find a much better $20 wine I'll be very surprised, but I'll buy it too. Unless you're talking about odd little unusual wines? But that's a different pursuit, and I see no reason I can't do both.

Mark:

For a moment you had me thinking I was going to be able to buy the '03 Trilogy. Not nice!

;-)

Happy hunting, all.

I just ordered some wines on-line and had no issues. Now off to my store to pick up some merchandise. Just in time for JUly 4th weekend!

Capaneus,
Not targeting you just trying to make a point on total spend with these PLCB sales and using CInq Cepages as an example. Finding a bottle better than the 04 Cinq Cepages for $20 is personal preference. My point was just, if you're going to spend $240, would you rather have 8 bottles of something you REALLY like (avg $30) and want in your cellar that's not on sale or 12 bottles of an (what many consider) avg wine?

Just a thought as we all open our wallets for this sale. Of course, with wine, so much relies on personal preference, or whatever you want the bottles for. So whatever everyone buys, as long as you're happy and enjoy it is all that matters. Cheers!!!

Interesting. Yesterday there were 520 bottles in the warehouse of the the 02 Latour Corton Grancey. I ordered a couple (as well as others I'm sure) and today it's showing 602 in the warehouse?!? Do you think they acquired more?

J2K, I think some of the inventory numbers are rather dubious. Right now www.lcb.state.pa.us is showing 343 units of that wine at the online store but when you go there it's unavailable. I was in Hershey the last couple days for a wedding and called the Lemoyne store as they supposedly have 16 units of the Beringer Bancroft Merlot and I'd love to get a couple but the woman who answered the phone told me they were sold out.

Too late to do any good, I found out that the numbers are far more than dubious: they're wrong. The PLCB is apparently in the process of upgrading their systems, and in the meantime the inventory is being updated on, at best, a 24hr delay. I think there's problems beyond that, but it doesn't matter: that's enough to make it entirely unreliable for a fast selling item - like, for instance, everything in this sale.

So if you want something, and it shows as in-stock, call ahead and confirm. Save you from running around Philadelphia like a particularly dumb chicken-with-its-head-cut-off. Hypothetically.

As far as the online store is concerned, *their* numbers are accurate. So when you click through and it says it can't find an item, it speaks truth. So it's down to trial-and-error, but keep in mind there are relatively few things left: the Bynum Rochiolli, the Dutschke Tokay, the Simonet-Febvre "Les Preuses", the '03 Laforge, the Ancient Coast icewine and... and maybe a few other things I wasn't that interested in. The Chablis is the only one of those I'm sure is available in significant quantity.
