Another sale!

Just got an e-mail from the PLCB regarding a new sale starting Feb 4. "Up to 80% off quoted prices..."

The e-mail shows a couple examples:

Louis Latour Meursault 2003 $ 16.99 (Was $29.99)
Vall Llach Embriux Priorat 2004 $9.99 (Was $19.99)

It says limited quantities.

Also it appears to NOT be an online sale, it says to "Visit a Premium Collection Store near you on Frbruary 4th to take advantage of these amazing savings."

There is also a link for end of year sales on the main page - all online deals - but discounts not as dinosauric as the 4-in-store. Interestingly, quite a few of the online deals are from the Loire!

eastpa: I'm fairly sure I get these e-mails because I signed up at my local store. This mailing mentions these four wines as being "examples" of what will be offered, implying there will be significantly more.

timo: If you're referring to the New Year Clean Out Sale, that's been going on for some weeks now: the bulk of it is actually leftovers from a clearance of Wine Connection unsold stock at the end of last year. Some deals seem decent, but the selection if pretty picked-over by now. I expect this sale to be more exciting, although I'm already bracing for some frustration, as the availability of the four listed wines is *really* spotty.

I am curious to see if these discounts will be available online as well, or if they'll only be in stores.

Starting tomorrow morning the Chairman's Selection page on PAWineTalk will call out the wines that are included in the sale and what the old and new price is. Sorry we don't know yet exactly which wines will be on sale.

I got 7 bottles of the Vall Llach Embriux Priorat 2004 $9.99 from the Collegeville store yesterday. They had very few bottles of anyting and there was no sign for the sale- you had to know.

Yeah I went to two stores north of Pittsburgh yesterday morning. In one the manager greeted me and pointed out the sale...they had handwritten signs showing the sale prices. Then I went to another and it was like your experience Mike...no signs, no one said anything, you just had to know.

I picked up some of the Latour Meursault Ch. Blagny, and several of the different Priorats. Also grabbed a Martinborough Pinot Noir out of curiosity.

I hit this sale hard. Filled up the cart. Went to the Cranberry store Wednesday night which had signs up and a decent selection was available. Gotta love sales!

Maybe I don't have the right frame of reference for Priorat, but I'm just not liking the two selections from Vall Llach as much as everyone else.

Opened a bottle of the Embruix yesterday afternoon and poured two glasses (since I'm still decanter-less). They sat for 3 hours before dinner. I had many of the same observations as others: dusty, a bit tannic, over-alcoholic (15.1%). It didn't taste hot, but I felt it in my temples. To me it was very earthy, almost gritty, and lacking fruit. I didn't enjoy it at all on its own. It was better with food. It wasn't that it was bad, or poorly made, rather it was just not my cup of tea. Wife didn't care for it either.

And Mike: Any time! Have you been to Chez Gerard? It's on Rt. 40 in Hopwood just outside Uniontown. We haven't been in a couple years but hopefully it's still there. A French couple own it, wife is Maitre d' and husband is the chef. The service is inconsistent but the food is great.

My father-in-law has owned the mortgage there since the original couple opened the restaurant. I've always been underwhelmed by both the food and the service.

The time line:
Monday, Mark informs us all there will be a sale (thanks Mark)

Tuesday I manipulate my Wednesday office schedule so I have the ability to make a few calls on clients! 

Wednesday morning, Check Wine Talk and cross reference the sale items with the 7 premium stores in my area.....Inventory is light but everything on my list is available.

Store #1 Sold out of everything except 1 bottle of Vall Llach Embriux Priorat....They had 17 bottle to start the day.

Store #2 Sold out of everything I was looking for except 2 bottles of cims de porrera solanes 03.

Feeling a little discouraged, I press on to the next store!
Store #3 Norristown I score several bottles including Idus Priorat.

Return to the office a little disappointed, but with a plan. Collegeville is on the way home from the office, so I check the state inventory list and confirm there are still bottles of the Vall Llach Embriux Priorat its early afternoon.
Office issues keep me late. I arrive at the Collegeville store at almost 8pm....Early bird gets the Priorat.....Cheers mikev.
Didn't score very much, but I had fun trying.

The priorat was gone at 9:10am. The lady in front of me took 8 bottles and I got the rest. She was on her way to landsdale to score some sleepy hollow chard I think. Like I said collegeville didn't have much for sale of anything.

I'm in Monroeville(east Pittsburgh), my store had the signs and all sale wines were right up front.

I had a spreadsheet of all the sale wines on Monday (sorry a little late). Is there a way to attach a spreadsheet or copy and paste here.

Anyway, I picked up a case of $9.99 Vall Llach embriux. It's not the greatest wine but a fantastic value for $9.99.

Well, it turns out that stores have been instructed not to transfer any of the wines involved in this sale. Which means, in effect, that I have no access to the bulk of the wines I was interested in. Which makes me very angry.

Every time I figure the naysayers are wrong, and that it *is* possible to make the PLCB Experience a happy one, they go and do something dumb and inconsiderate like this.

J2K, we're using a very "light" bulletin board package which eschews many fancier features like member-to-member messaging, uploading documents and pictures, etc. If there's enough interest then adding such capability could be explored. In the meantime there's nothing to stop you from copying and pasting (although any formatting would be lost).
