Has anybody had it? Is it worth 65 bones?

Thanks. I did see the glowing reviews on Cellar Tracker and 2001 was a good year for Cali Cab. I am still on the fence. If I got confirmation that the Reserves in PA were in good form, it would probably get me to the store. 2001 has some age on it and if these were frying away for 6 years or so I would be less than thrilled five years from now when I open it. In other words - Guinea pigs wanted!

Okay here is the story- I bought this 01 Mondavi Reserve Cab about a year ago. As you can see on the Cellar Tracker link above, Paul S has a tasting note from the Cellar Tracker-CT London Event. Well I brought my bottle to that event but there was so many good wines there (around 60) that I don't remember drinking any of the 01 Mondavi Reserve. So I just purchased another and with the beautiful weather we had this weekend, I threw a steak on the grill and needed a cab to pair it with. I thought the wine was fantastic and I posted my tasting notes here. While I can't say if you'll think it's worth $65 bones, I can say that it was in good condition and didn't show any signs of being cooked or fried.

Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2001

Decanted 2 hours. Powerful nose of dark fruits, with a slight vegetal hint. Full body, very strong and concentrated fruit blackberry, cassis, plum, blackcurrant. Good balance of acidity and some powdery tannins. Finish is long with some tobacco coming through. Overall oustanding rich cab flavors and not over oaked. This wine is still young and could easily rest for a few more years. Although it did seem to peak at 4 hours open.

J2K,

Thanks for hopping onto the hamster wheel for me and easing my trepidation. Sounds like the wine is in fine shape, but could use a little more time to integrate. It also sounds like it represents only a decent value at that relatively steep price. I think I will jump in based on your review, but only for one bottle. After all, we appear to have some 2005 Robert Craigs on the way. I might climb the wheel on one of those to return the favor.

I used to be a little skeptical of the Chairman's Cabs. Sometimes we get deals yes, but on off vintages and for wineries that used to be somebodies, i.e. Whitehall Lane, Burgess, Heitz et al. But it looks like some previously inaccessible Napa cabs are falling from the stratosphere and the PLCB is in a pretty good position to nab some high quality juice.

Thanks again,

Dan
