State Store temp

Has anyone noticed the temps in the state stores? I am glad the employees are toasty, but that means the wine is too. I feel like I'm rescuing the bottles when I go....

Varies by store but you're right. The relatively new (3.5 yrs) Eastside store:
Wine & Spirits Store 0247
5956 Penn Circle South
Pittsburgh, PA 15206 - 3815
has two exterior walls of mostly glass, the south and west, and yes they put wine against those walls...of course they have to since they have so much stock. Walk in on a sunny afternoon and sunlight is streaming over all those beautiful bottles(!). At least there is a small temperature controlled room at the opposite corner so a few lucky selections are OK.

Storage temp is tough to monitor. Even in the stores that have temp controlled rooms, I find "high end" = $100+ wines out on the racks, or hiding away in the back rooms.

I remember when the 2005 bordeaux arrived they only had 1-bottle of each in the controlled room. When I asked why, they said that the back room kept the temp closer to outside temps so the bottles wouldn't be "shocked" when they left the store. :(

It would be nice to have an ongoing list of stores with comments on storage.

One poor storage suspect that comes to mind is # 3918, The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley

This store is a fairly new addition, and is a Selection Store that doesn't have temp controlled rooms. I asked if they were going to add a cooler, and they commented that the cooler rooms "scare away" customers. They said that they might get a small display case that was controlled.

This store is always warm in the summer, but it was tolerable when I visited last week.

Steved that's an interesting idea, some sort of on-going commentary on a store-by-store basis. Have you been to store #4608 in Bryn Mawr? The temp controlled room is like half the store!

My recollection of discussions with winemakers in Seneca wineries is that the temp (while a factor) had to get jacked up pretty high & was less likely a factor than sunlight exposure for wine. Assuming that's correct be careful when shopping at the Pgh Waterworks store. Great inventory & exceptional high end room (I can only press my nose against the glass there) & a very good 'wine guy' there, BUT they stack about 50 CS wines (not just the $10 Sav Blancs either) in two back-to-back rows at the front of the store. Was there on a sunny afternoon recently & you could read the back labgel through the front of most of the Cabs & Syrahs! That can't be good...

Mark, I haven't been in Bryn Mawr store. Do you happen to know if they store their port in temp controlled room? Also curious about the Ardmore store?

I've been thinking about getting some 2000 from PLCB, but every store I've been in have them out in the racks at room temp. Port is pretty resilient stuff, but if you want to keep it for 40-50 yrs, it needs to be taken care of. Hate to see all of the 2007-ports just role in and out on the floor they go. Most will linger there for some time at $70-90.

I was in the area a couple years ago and made it a point to stop by the Ardmore store, as I understand that it does the highest volume of sales in the state. I struck up a conversation with the manager and he suggested that I also stop by the Bryn Mawr store as it was nearby and had a large temp controlled room. Memory has faded a little but it seems that most of their premium selection / luxury items were in the room...it was that big. Oddly the store itself wasn't overly large. I seem to recall someone somewhere along the line saying that it had been Newman's local store when he was still Chairman which is why it got "special treatment." Probably just a rumor but who knows?
