Any one been? Any suggestions on how to use the PLCB Product search to see their inventory? After all the fuss about whether this specialty shop concept is fair to restaurants, I've heard nothing about the actual selection of wines.

Thanks

As you probably know there is no way to search within a specific store on the PLCB web site search page. Also, that particular store does not appear on the PLCB web site list of stores, or at least not yet anyway.

So, we asked around and got some good info.

The initial list of items and prices is below, subject to change of course.

The store number is 5148. Not that that matters since nothing shows up in inventory there on the PLCB search page. However there are a number of items on this list that show as only being in store 5144, which interestingly is just a couple blocks away. Perhaps those are the exclusive items for this new "Boutique" store.

Thanks! Looks like a nice selection, but hardly worth a special trip. Of course, there would also be plenty of charcuterie and other goodies....

FYI someone sued the LCB over this...

Thanks for the info admin!

We went in the store and took a quick look around. The wines are displayed in a special room with wooden racks. There are wine refrigerators. The staff is friendly. We didn't see many wines that are not in the other premium collection stores but there were a lot of half-bottles which is great if you are eating there and want to try something. Definitely unfair to the other restaurants, but good for the consumer.

Someone needs to explain to me where exactly the unfairness lies.

The argument goes like this...

If I open a restaurant I can purchase a liquor license for $$$ and then offer my own liquor which I need to sell at inflated prices to pay off the license. Or, I can skip the liquor license and costs associated with educating my wait staff and maintaining inventory and just be a BYOB.

Garces gets to skip the liquor license and related costs but effectively offer wine for sale on the premises at retail prices. They don't get any of the profits of course, but theoretically they are more appealing than regular BYOBs which means more traffic.

There are probably still customers who do not want to go to a wine store even if it is on-site, and instead prefer to have a sommelier make recommendations and bring a wine to them. I guess the question is how many customers are still like that.

Sure. But the thing is, Garces is one restaurateur whose track record suggests his new, budget-priced restaurant would likely be operating at capacity to start with. So no real benefit, and no competition beyond what might be expected if he did not have a State Store in his pocket.

And I have trouble accepting the premise that those poor darling license-holders actually have to charge me a 400% markup on wine - or risk having Tiny Tim die of the rickets.

As I see it, the folks who actually might have a gripe with this are the BYOB owners, and I haven't really heard much grousing from them. The people who are howling for blood are the same people who have been bitching about these damn kids and their newfangled no-license establishments, infringing on good Capitalists' God-given right to reach into my pocket and rape my wallet.

Hmmmm. I just possibly might be carrying around some resentment on this matter.

Capaneus:

Really??? LOL.

Capaneus:

In the above-linked article on philly.com, it mentions that the suit was brought by "Coalition of Restaurant Owners for Liquor Control Fairness" which includes BYOB owners Jon Myerow (Kwass' partner at Tria), Valerie Safran (Bindi, Lolita), and Mary Ann Ferrie and Dan Grimes (Chloe), plus several non-BYOB owners.

I think the PLCB deserves a lot of credit for trying to find new options for consumers, and it's unfortunate there is so much litigation.

Safran now owns a licensed establishment, if memory serves. Still, even counting her two BYOs, plus Chloe, that's still "not much grousing", all things considered. On the other hand, I imagine the plaintiffs are not an exhaustive list of all who object, so there are probably more to be found.

But even if there are, I still see no real rational argument against this. Moot point, since all the fuss has made it virtually certain Garces Trading Co. will remain the only such store. Which, from a consumer standpoint, is a darn shame. I'd like to see them mushrooming everywhere a cork might pop. Can you imagine? Anything the PLCB can find, available at retail price for your dining delight!

And if you're unimpressed, you're still able to bring your own illegally-purchased DRC or Screagle. The very thought brings a fond tear to my eye. God bless the PLCB and their pointy, gray-suited, bureaucratic heads...

Again, as long as you're linking back to your own site, for Chairman's Selections, please take the time to enter ratings for them here as well (http://www.pawinetalk.com/detail/?id=1000624).
